Edward Carr, Synthesis of the Russian Revolution, Lenin, Stalin

BY EMILIO TOMASSINI

Chapter 1. October 1917.

October 1917 represented the first open challenge to the capitalist system. Russian industry had a modest, although it was in the process of growth. From the foregoing it may be deduced also the numerical growth of the industrial proletariat. Moreover, the rural economy was stagnant.
In this context comes the first major rebellion against the Tsar in 1905, it was liberal constitutionalist rebels, workers and peasants. The czar could keep grudgingly giving some concessions to the rebels. What major differences existed between the 05 and 17? First the war and resistance by the military to obey the tsar, second, they had returned home after many exiled revolutionaries in 1905. The social composition of the rebels was similar, there was the RSDLP (which would be split between the Bolsheviks, which means "majority" and Mensheviks, meaning "minority").
During the interim government increased the number of soviets (workers' associations, military and farmers), farmers took advantage to take land. Lenin and the Bolsheviks had many followers in the factories and the armed forces. Lenin argued that the state should go extinct, because while it exists, there would be no freedom. Hence the famous slogan "All Power to the Soviets." The Soviets organized a central military committee led by Leon Trotsky. October 25 (November 7 Western calendar) the Red Guards, mostly composed of workers, occupied strategic locations in Moscow and went on the Winter Palace. At this point, the provisional government no longer existed.
The first steps of the brand new revolutionary government were: to propose peace "without annexations and indemnities", met demand petty bourgeois peasant land expropriated without compensation by giving large landowners, banned the sale and lease of land and wage labor. It created the People's Commissars as new interim government. Internationally
surprised the Russian Revolution. He drew attention to the neglect of the war, expropriation of land and scared the wealthier classes expansion of socialism. However, nobody in their right mind could hope that the revolution must be sustainable over time, skepticism prevailed also among the Russian revolutionaries. Since his authority just came to St. Petersburg and other cities. Also the only autoridad central el congreso panruso de los Soviet, cuyas fuerzas armadas estaban dispersas y no eran demasiado numerosas.
